Also known as Saskatoon or Pacific serviceberry, it is native to Alaska and most of Western Canada and the U.S., growing from sea level in the northwest up to 8,500 feet in the mountains of California. Can be very productive of large, sweet and delicious dark purple-black berries that are borne in clusters. A major food source for wildlife and native peoples, this is the specie from which most named commercial selections have been derived from. A deciduous clumping shrub or small tree it grows from 3 to 20 feet tall depending on the climate and soil type. Very showy with clusters of white flowers in the spring, berries in summer, good fall color and attractive branch structure in the winter. Hardy zones 2-8.
